Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

After earning my undergraduate degree and working in the industry, I decided to focus on solving open research problems related to system limitations. Tackling these challenges requires critical thinking and the freedom to experiment, even if it leads to failure. A graduate program provides the opportunity to identify open-ended problems and the freedom to explore solutions without being constrained by the outcome, which motivated me to pursue this path.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

I believe the Computer and Software Systems Research Group at ECE is comprised of great professors working at the intersection of computer and systems architecture and working on some very interesting problems that align with my research interests. Apart from the research aspect, UBC Vancouver campus's beauty and lot of physical activities going around campus helps you with a healthy work-life balance which is one very important aspect of grad life.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

The Computer and Software Systems Research Group at ECE includes excellent professors, addressing problems that align with my research interests. Beyond research, the beauty of UBC's Vancouver campus and the many physical activities available contribute to a healthy work-life balance, which is an important aspect of graduate life.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

The active lifestyle in Vancouver, with options like running trails, hiking, skiing, kayaking and biking, has been the best surprise of life here. In addition, the diversity at UBC and throughout Vancouver makes it easier to settle into a new environment and city.

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

My experience in the industry helped me adapt to new environments and stay open to challenges and problems.

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

I stay active by going to the gym, running, taking long walks and skiing. These activities help clear my mind and bring a sense of peace.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Starting a graduate program can feel overwhelming at first. It requires a shift in mindset, focusing on research rather than just completing courses. My advice to new graduate students is to take your time adjusting to the new environment, stay open with your advisor and make sure to carve out time for yourself. Remember, grad school is a marathon, not a sprint.
