Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
My passion for cancer research and virology inspired me to pursue a PhD. Throughout my academic journey—from my master’s studies to hands-on research in oncolytic virotherapy—I have been dedicated to advancing cancer treatment strategies. This degree allows me to explore critical research questions, utilize cutting-edge technologies, and contribute to scientific progress with my own work.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
The best surprise about UBC was the incredibly supportive and collaborative research environment. I was also amazed by how breathtakingly beautiful Vancouver is—the combination of mountains, ocean, and city life creates a perfect balance between work and relaxation.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
My background in medical virology, hands-on research in oncolytic virotherapy, and collaboration on cancer projects have prepared me well for my UBC graduate program. Through my lab experience, problem-solving skills, and work as a research and teaching assistant, I have developed strong teamwork, leadership, and communication skills—essential for success in a PhD program.
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
Graduate school can be challenging, and research can sometimes be difficult, but staying motivated and disciplined is key to pushing through. It is important to seek support, stay open to learning, and avoid comparing your progress to others. Also, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential—Vancouver offers a wonderful environment to recharge and stay inspired.
