Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
As a film and television producer, I wanted to pursue a graduate degree to focus on telling the stories I'm excited about in screenplay, novel and creative nonfiction. My masters allows me to explore writing in various forms as I shift my career.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
UBC's School of Creative Writing is world-renowned and requires writers to work in various forms. The optional residency stream allows me to learn from incredible writers and professors without relocating to Vancouver when I have work and a family in Toronto.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
The MFA in Creative Writing requires writers to take courses in three forms, which encourages broad thinking and the desire to try new things during the masters program. Most Creative Writing programs have writers focus on one form, and I love how UBC encourages and requires interdisciplinary practice and growth.
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
I attended UBC for my undergraduate degree and lived on campus. UBC is a stunning place to live and attend school, which is another reason I chose to do my masters at UBC.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
As a film and TV producer, the notes process - both giving and receiving them - is something that I'm very comfortable with and is a key part of the MFA program. I'm grateful to have that prior experience so I don't get overwhelmed by feedback during workshop.
