Research Description

I will use a qualitative approach to study decentralized project teams to understand their information and communication practices.

What does being a Public Scholar mean to you?

Being a Public Scholar holds tremendous meaning to me. It says the team trusts my project's positive impact on the sustainable community and provides many more opportunities for me to promote sustainable initiatives using innovative technology.

In what ways do you think the PhD experience can be re-imagined with the Public Scholars Initiative?

The PhD experience can be re-imagined as being more community-oriented and having real-world impact.

How do you envision connecting your PhD work with broader career possibilities?

I can broaden my career possibilities beyond academic to research-intensive sectors like the government or think tanks.

How does your research engage with the larger community and social partners?

My research will mostly focus on sustainable initiatives using innovative technology. Currently, I am supporting a sustainable mining initiative in BC.

How do you hope your work can make a contribution to the “public good”?

My work will help (1) bring more attention to sustainable projects using innovative technology, (2) help these projects' governance teams understand their communication practices and possible improvements and (3) provide an information governance framework for successful deployment of decentralized projects.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

It took me a long time to find my way. But after many incidents in life, I have realized that learning and intellectual engagement bring me peace, motivation, empathy and positive energy. I hope to pay it forward by conducting meaningful research that will benefit society and the environment.

Why did you choose to come to British Columbia and study at UBC?

Years ago, while searching for a higher institution for my graduate program, I fell in love with a picture of UBC's rose garden and all the ocean and mountains surrounding it. After that, I felt the UBC online system was really professional, smart and effective. Coming here, my love for UBC was enhanced by its safe, intellectually-nurturing and inclusive environment. UBC has been my intellectual home since.
