Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about mathematics and have dreamt of doing research in math. Pursuing a graduate degree was the way for this dream to come true.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

When I was admitted to the department of mathematics by my advisor and learned about her area of research, algebraic statistics, I found it intriguing that her problems of interest build a bridge between pure and applied mathematics. That is why I decided to work under her supervision and study at UBC.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

UBC's math program has a high reputation and there are many renowned professors in the department. This was a selling point of the UBC math graduate program for me.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

The UBC campus is really picturesque. I have always enjoyed the privilege of having the Rose Garden only a few minutes away from my office. I love to go and sit there in the middle of the day as I am thinking about a math problem or sending some emails!

What aspect of your graduate program do you enjoy the most or are looking forward to with the greatest curiosity?

Being a PhD student and doing research has given me the opportunity to travel to different places to attend conferences and present my research projects. I find it exciting that I can meet so many amazing researchers and connect with various communities of mathematicians during these trips.

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

I attended strict schools and later, a rather strict undergraduate program. Moreover, within my family, hard work and perseverance are highly valued. I believe that these experiences in both academic settings and family life have helped me throughout my graduate program.

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

I usually like to walk around campus and listen to music. There are also some benches near Canada Place where I sometimes reward myself by lying down and listening to music for a couple of hours while looking over the beautiful Vancouver Harbour and watching the seaplanes.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Starting graduate school, like any other new experience, can be challenging. As one delves into their area of research, they not only learn more about their field but also about what kind of researcher they want to be. This makes their academic life less stressful and more enjoyable. We just need to give it some time!
