Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
I decided to pursue a graduate degree because of my curiosity and passion for research. I have always been involved in sexual health advocacy, and I wanted to take my passion further by pursuing a master's thesis. I plan to use my research to provide a voice for marginalized women historically underrepresented in academia and publish research results that can eventually make a difference in sexual health policy for these women from an equity, diversity and inclusion perspective.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
I decided to study at UBC because of the dedicated faculty and staff. The community is vibrant, and many resources are available to help students succeed. UBC also offers many workshops and career development opportunities, all free for students. My supervisor has been incredibly supportive and has all the tools, wisdom and knowledge that give me great confidence to finish my thesis.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
UBC's Kinesiology program attracted me because the faculty is one of the top-ranked programs in the world. The faculty are knowledgeable and excellent instructors who make lectures engaging and fun. The staff are also super supportive. The School of Kinesiology at UBC is also such a tight-knit community. All the graduate students are super supportive, and we have the most fun socials and hangouts!
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
The best surprise about UBC and Vancouver is how many extracurriculars this school and city offers! Thanks to the art scene in Vancouver and the many student clubs offered at UBC, I discovered my love for stand-up and improv comedy!
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
Having work experience working with children during my undergraduate years helped me prepare for the UBC graduate program. I learned so much about communication and what it means to be a role model. As a researcher, you must adhere to the highest standards of respect and do no harm, so being around children teaches you those skills!
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
Joining student clubs is one of the best ways to meet new people. Come to Graduate Student Society events and meet other graduate students! It will make your studies here at UBC more enjoyable, I promise!
