Structured decision-making framework for extreme flow events for dams
Dr. Ziad Khalid Shawwash

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

After completing my undergrad I worked for a year in a private firm. At that time I realized that my knowledge as an engineer was not robust enough to solve the real life problems. The main cause of it was my research deficiency. So I decided to pursue a research-based graduate degree.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

Because of the reputation of the teachers at the university and the weather of Vancouver. :)

What do you hope to accomplish with your research?

The purpose of this project is to develop an effective tool for the Operations Planning Engineers in Generation Resource Management of BC Hydro (British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority) which can be used quickly and efficiently during high flood events at BC Hydro facilities. And for that the more favorable or acceptable solution is to apply a Structured Decision Making Framework for the River facility. In this paper you will find out the build up of a Decision Framework after concerning uncertainties for different criteria which are difficult to measure by means of a common unit. The main intention of the paper is that decisions made in real-time will be less dependent on the planner’s own risk tolerance and more aligned with corporate risk tolerances acceptable to senior management.

What are your future career goals?

To establish myself as a good and efficient engineer with my strong technical background and enthusiastic hard working ability. More and more to serve my country.

What has been your most memorable Vancouver experience so far?

The fireworks. I like those.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

I will say to them "You are most welcome". Come and join this great resourceful university of Canada and try to enrich your knowledge.
