This section provides information about appointing students to teach a course, Student Services appointments, international student employment, and employment after graduation.
It also covers enrolment and course registration information for graduate students appointed as faculty or staff.
Student Service Appointments
Student service appointments are intended to help qualified graduate students meet the cost of their studies at the University. Student appointments may involve part-time duties in teaching, research, or other academic activities. Normally, only those students registered full-time in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies are eligible. Appointments offered to students prior to their admission to the Faculty are contingent upon admission.

Permission to Teach
Graduate student teaching was previously addressed in Board of Governors’ Policy AP7: “Appointment of Graduate Students to Teach a Course Requiring a Board of Governors Appointment” or “Graduate Student Teaching Policy”. The policy required graduate students to meet specific criteria in order to hold teaching appointments, and exceptions to those criteria required the approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
At the request of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, the Board of Governors conducted a review of the policy in 2022. As a result of this review, the policy was repealed effective December 6 2022. The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies no longer needs to be informed or consulted when a student is considered for a teaching appointment.
Staff as Graduate Students
Staff at UBC are permitted to register for degree programs in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies provided standard admission requirements are met.
Specific arrangements with your office of employment and/or prospective graduate program should be negotiated early on, or prior to the application process.
Faculty as Graduate Students
Since UBC Policy #46 was repealed by UBC Senate, guidelines for faculty becoming graduate students are governed by Policy SC3 (formerly policy #97) Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Commitment. Faculty are responsible for informing themselves and complying with requirements imposed on them by UBC Policy SC3 and all related policies.
Student Safety Abroad
An increasing number of UBC students undertake international travel for the purpose of study, research, work, volunteer and service learning as part of the UBC experience. Such activities can expose students to certain health and safety risks.
Policy SC12, Student Safety Abroad, sets out a process for approving student international travel for University Activities. Its purpose is to enable student travelers to be informed of and manage the risks associated with travelling abroad, and to help the University respond to emergency situations in areas to which UBC students have travelled.
