First developed by the University of Queensland in 2008, the Three Minute Thesis competition (3MT®) challenges research students to communicate the significance of their projects to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes.
UBC was one of the first universities in North America to host a 3MT competition, when it held the inaugural 3MT @UBC in 2011. Every year heats are held across campus beginning in February, with winners moving on to the UBC-wide Semi-Finals and Finals in March. Here is a link to Videos from UBC’s 2014 semi-final and final 3MT rounds.
Following a successful launch in 2013, the U21 3MT 2014 competition pits the leading presenters from each U21 member university against one another. Each participating member has held their own internal 3MT competition to select a local winner who was put forward for the U21 final, to be judged by an international panel consisting of industry and academic professionals. This virtual final gives participants the opportunity to hone skills associated with being filmed for an international audience, receiving international peer review, and gaining skills surrounding the presentation of their research to a wide audience.
Mark your calendars for UBC 3MT 2015! The semi-final and final dates are Tuesday, March 10th and Wednesday, March 12th respectively. Updates on preliminary heats around campus can be found at 3mt.grad.ubc.ca
