My undergraduate degree is in Fine Arts, and my work in media before last year was largely self-taught. Seeing how digital technologies have rapidly shifted the way the media communicates, I wanted to zoom out for a bit to consider my contribution – specifically in the area of arts and culture – and acquire new skills for addressing the current state of media.
The journalism program at UBC is well-rounded and digitally-driven, and in media today there really is no other option. I'm also originally from BC so coming back here to do my master's was a coming home of sorts.
An experienced and varied faculty; a program that looks at multiple aspects of the media and how and when they intersect.
I was warned about the rain and that meeting friends in this city is tough, but even when it rains it's bright, and in a program like journalism, you meet a bunch of people.
Meeting people, listening, learning, making connections, and sharing stories in engaging ways.
Balancing freelance work in a field with few full-time job opportunities.
Open dialogue about the realities; resources and connections to professional networks.
I'm a trained dancer and worked professionally up until last year. That discipline, time management, and work ethic carries into how I've been able to manage this past year and what I know I can accomplish next year.
Go see live performance; walk the city; run; snowboard.
Approach each and every day open to learning something new. That might include a monumental shift in ideology, or some new technology that makes your life easier.
