Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
I decided to pursue graduate studies to satisfy my curiosity about human cognition in an environment surrounded by some of the brightest minds in my field. Furthermore, I wanted to have a supportive space to ask questions and build my technical skills.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
I decided to study at UBC following a visit to the campus where I was stunned by the kindness of the administrators and staff as well as the beauty of the campus itself. The environment at UBC is one of welcome and ambition and I was confident that it was the right choice for me.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
A major draw for me was that UBC has one of the most prestigious graduate psychology programs at both a national and international level. Reasons for which became apparent at my first visit. The faculty here is kind and collaborative and the facilities are extensive, which made me confident that I would be able to investigate any research question I had.
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
The beauty of the campus and Vancouver is unmatched and for me the biggest surprise was that I haven't gotten used to it! Several years in and I am still in awe.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
My relationships with my professors were what prepared me the most. I was very lucky to have amazing mentors throughout my undergraduate studies that provided me with research opportunities. I would recommend to anyone interested in graduate research program to talk to your current or past professors and look for opportunities to get involved in a lab!
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
My biggest piece of advice would be to prioritize work-life balance. Set a work schedule and do your best to stick to it! It's so easy to catch yourself working into the night, especially when you love what you do, but it's important to take time to rest and recharge.
