Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I decided to pursue graduate school to gain new research skills and knowledge that will support my future career goals, particularly in the areas of aging and health. During my undergraduate degree, I had the immense privilege of working in several research labs, where I was able to explore various disciplines within psychology. These experiences allowed me to discover my passion for research and deepened my love for learning, ultimately guiding me toward the path of graduate school.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

One of the reasons I decided to study at the University of British Columbia was the sense of community at the school. The welcoming atmosphere and collaborative spirit among students and faculty really drew me in. There are so many opportunities to get involved on campus in research, workshops and other events, and I am excited to take advantage of these opportunities to diversify my education.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

The University of British Columbia’s Department of Psychology is ranked among the top in the world and is a leader in graduate-level research. I was particularly drawn to the opportunities for collaboration and the program's strong research focus. Additionally, the chance to work with distinguished faculty and engage in interdisciplinary research was incredibly exciting.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

There is so much to explore in Vancouver, and there’s something for everyone! It’s a great balance of nature and urban living. It has been so fun trying new activities and building new relationships within the diverse student body.

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

During my undergraduate degree, I focused on getting involved in various clubs and research opportunities. These experiences helped me shape my research goals and identify the areas I’m most passionate about. I’m thankful for the skills I gained during this time, and I feel that these experiences have prepared me well for my current program.

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

In my free time, I love taking the opportunity to get outside and get active. I love running, and I have been having so much fun finding new trails to explore and new running groups to join! There are so many in the Vancouver area, and it has been such a good way to meet new people and connect with others who also enjoy the activity. Also, I really enjoy reading and painting as a way to unwind.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

The start of graduate school can be quite overwhelming, and it's easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others. It's important to remind yourself of the unique strengths you bring and to remember that graduate school is about embracing opportunities for learning and personal growth. Finding a balance between academic commitments and relaxation is essential; taking the time to explore the city and unwind is just as important to your education. These are all aspects I'm still navigating as I begin this new chapter in my life, and I will continue to focus on them throughout my degree!
