Help-seeking in Indigenous undergraduate students

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I always envisioned my future career as something in the field of mental health that would allow me to work closely with people. However, after having the opportunity to get involved with research as an undergraduate student, I realized how exciting and fulfilling research can be! I was thrilled to learn that a graduate education in Clinical Psychology would allow me to pursue both of my passions.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

Having completed my undergraduate degree at UBC Okanagan, I was ready for a new adventure. But, I was not quite ready to give up British Columbia! From my first conversations with my supervisor, Dr. Mikami, I felt inspired and was certain that if I came here, I would be in a supportive environment that would challenge me in all the best ways. I feel so grateful that I get to learn from such brilliant people and pursue research that I am so passionate about.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

The Clinical Psychology program here at UBC is renowned for good reason. I felt that the strong emphasis placed on research along with high-quality clinical training would enable me to grow as both a scientist and a clinician.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

I was pleasantly surprised that even though UBC is such a big university, there is such a sense of community within my department and my program. The other graduate students have been incredibly welcoming and are some of the kindest people I have ever met!

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

My research experiences were definitely instrumental in preparing me for graduate studies. Although, I also believe my professional experiences and the time I spent working in between my undergraduate and graduate schooling enabled me to grow a lot both personally and professionally. I was in such a hurry to start graduate school, but in hindsight, having time to explore my research interests further and fully understand the impact that I want to make is the best thing that could have happened to me.

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

I enjoy being by the ocean, whale watching, hiking and playing soccer.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Some advice I received and found helpful is that your graduate school experience is what you make it. It is up to you to find and pursue opportunities that align with your goals and passions. Not every opportunity will be a good one for you, and your time is a resource. Use it wisely!
