Magmatic evolution and genesis of Reko Diq porphyry copper gold deposits, District Chagai, Balochistan province, Pakistan
Dr. Richard Dick Tosdal
Quetta
Pakistan

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
I worked for 10 years on Reko Diq and defined this as a giant, world class copper gold resource. After this landmark achievement, I realized that something is missing! and that was that very limited academic and research work was done on Reko Diq. That is why I decided to understand this valuable copper-gold resource from sn academic perspective and put together a research project aiming towards learning something exceptional about Reko Diq and porphyry copper gold deposits worldwide.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
British Columbia is a museum of economic mineral deposits with well advanced exploration and mining industry. I chose UBC for several good reasons. The high profile faculty members, analytical equipment and facilities, stimulating environment and more importantly, the flexibility and the facilitation in a system where things get done without obstacles were the main attractions for me. And yes, of course, UBC is one of the most beautiful and green campuses on earth, with great care for students, families and children.
What do you hope to accomplish with your research?
This is the first-ever comprehensive research study on the porphyry copper gold deposits of Chagai belt in Pakistan. The research study will define the fundamental aspects of the porphyry copper gold leading to develope a 4-D genetic porphyry model of Reko Diq. I have no doubts that the proposed porphyry model will provide a base for the exploration and discovery of new copper gold deposits in the region. The research outcomes will be utilized in Barrick Gold’s future mining and exploration programs not only in Reko Diq Pakistan, but throughout porphyry copper belts worldwide. I am confidant that the universities and research institutions in Pakistan will get inspiration and consider my research as a role model to open up more research avenues and collaborative projects with foreign universities and promote the research, exploration and mining of economic mineral deposits.
What are your future career goals?
Complete my PhD research project first and seek opportunities in the mineral exploration and mining industry preferably with a reputable organization such as Barrick Gold Corporation. Utilize my professional experience and skills to supervise active exploration and mining projects and train a team of geologists to enhance the rate of success towards the discovery of new mineral deposits.
What has been your most memorable Vancouver experience so far?
I will never forget the beauty, greenery and the breathtaking scenes from Grouse Mountain. I was amazed to experience the efficient, well coordinated and calculated public transport bus and Skytrain system.
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
My advice to incoming students is that make sure you have a well-defined and valuable research project that is interesting to you and has broad base implications. Special tip: Gather all academic, personal, and professional documents etc. and organize them in a folder which is going to be your life line in UBC Vancouver.
Personal Interests / Hobbies
Playing cricket, soccer, and badminton; painting, community relations and festivals.
