The Centre for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI) housed within Providence Health Care's St. Paul's Hospital in the heart of downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The HLI (previously the James Hogg Research Centre) is a University of British Columbia (UBC) Senate-approved centre of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and critical care expertise.
Our research activities and programs have grown rapidly since the establishment of the fledgling pulmonary laboratory in 1977 when Dr. Jim Hogg, along with Dr. Peter Paré and Lisa Baile were recruited to St. Paul's Hospital to open the Pulmonary Research Laboratory. Expansion of the focus to include cardiovascular and critical care research occurred in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s with the recruitment of Drs. Mike Allard, Keith Walley, Jim Russell, and Bruce McManus. The growing laboratory was renamed the McDonald Research Laboratories (MRL) when the Cardiovascular Research Laboratory (1993) and the Atherosclerosis Specialty Laboratories (1995) joined the research environment.
