Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
At first, I wanted to study outside my home country to experience the culture of another country and advance my undergrad study, so I applied for a MA program at UBC. The outstanding MA program here at UBC helped me build a deep passion for a lifelong career in academic research and teaching, which motivated me to continue a Ph.D. program here.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
UBC is a world famous university. I participated in the UBC Vancouver Summer Program in 2016, which is when I found that UBC has a beautiful campus, outstanding professors and a multi-cultural environment. Vancouver is a multi-cultural city, where I don't feel unwelcomed. Also, the weather in Vancouver is the best of all places in Canada.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
My program offers full scholarships, teaching and research assistantships, world-famous professors and small size classes.
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
I was surprised about the huge funding package that UBC provides, which is generous compared to other universities that also admitted me (including universities from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia). 2. I was also surprised by the convenience of living in Vancouver as a Chinese person. There are all kinds of great Chinese restaurants in Vancouver and Richmond where I can get cuisines from any region of China.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
1. Outstanding GPA 2. Rich research experience 3. Outstanding Language test scores and GRE 4. My passion for the study
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
Be prepared for your program and new studies, which is going to pretty heavy. The first term is always the hardest. For international students, take part in info sessions and online webinars organized by UBC's Graduate Pathways to Success program, which are super helpful for fitting in UBC and Vancouver as well.
