Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

After completing my undergraduate degree, it seemed like a natural path to continue on with my studies. It allowed me to build off of my foundational knowledge, and pursue meaningful and interesting research.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

UBC is one of the best institutions in Canada, and especially with regards to sociology. It is a beautiful campus on the west coast of Canada, where a lot of environmental activism pertinent to my research has taken place. It is also an area I have always wanted to experience.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

My program offers me the chance to learn from, and collaborate with, some truly fantastic scholars in a range of fields. The program courses provide some great methodological and theoretical training as well.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

With regard to UBC, the university is striving to adapt to changing academic labour market conditions, through initiatives such as the Public Scholars Initiative. I was very glad to see a top institution acknowledge this reality and work toward reorienting itself. With regards to Vancouver life, I was surprised at how much rain there truly is in the winter.

I chose UBC as it is one of the best institutions in Canada, especially with regards to sociology.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Figure out what times/hours of the day you work most productively, and use those hours to do your 'heavy lifting' (i.e. writing). Save the emails and CV updates for other times. Take weekends off!
