The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral (CGS D) program is a federal program of scholarships awarded through national competitions by the granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS D) Program is to promote continued excellence in Canadian research by rewarding and retaining high-calibre doctoral students at Canadian institutions. By providing support for a high-quality research training experience to awardees, the CGS D program strives to foster impacts within and beyond the research environment.
Note: In addition to the CGS D, each agency has its own doctoral awards. Refer to the appropriate literature for CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC for further details. Meritorious CGS D applicants may also be eligible for agency-specific doctoral awards. Applicants complete and submit one application to be considered for both a CGS D scholarship and an agency-specific doctoral award (exception: CIHR DFSA). CGS D scholarships are offered to top-ranked eligible applicants. Some eligibility requirements for CGS D differ from those of the agency-specific doctoral awards.
Fall 2024 competition deadlines:
Late applications will not be accepted.
Complete eligibility criteria are available on the CGS D program page.
Important Note: Some eligibility requirements for CGS D differ from those of the agency-specific doctoral awards. Refer to the appropriate literature for CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC for further details.
Complete evaluation criteria (including description and indicators) are available on the CGS D program page.
Students registered in a UBC degree program (or on an approved leave of absence from UBC) between 1 January and 31 December 2024 must complete their application by Friday, 13 September 2024 at 12:00 pm PT.

NSERC: Online application system | application instructions | application tutorials
SSHRC: Online application system | application instructions
Complete application procedures are available on the CGS D program page.
Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral application: CGS D applicants applying through UBC do not need to submit a separate Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral application. To be considered for criteria-based Affiliated Fellowships, students should submit the checklist of criteria-based affiliated fellowships to their graduate program by the application deadline.
Graduate programs review and rank the applications they receive, and forward their top applicants to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by uploading the required documents to their graduate program folder in Sharepoint. Nominations must be submitted by graduate programs to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies on Friday, 11 October 2024 at 4:00 pm PT.
Graduate program resources (including detailed nomination procedures in the "Graduate Program Procedures" document) will be posted here: https://faculty-staff.grad.ubc.ca/resources/award-administration (CWL log-in required).
CGS doctoral scholarship applications are first reviewed and ranked by the applicant's UBC graduate program. The graduate program forwards a limited number of its top-ranked applicants to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, which oversees a university-wide adjudication. Adjudication committees composed of UBC faculty members review and rank nominated applications and select which applications will be forwarded to the national competition. UBC's nominees are forwarded to NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR, which oversees a nation-wide competition that selects which CGS doctoral scholarship applications will be funded. Results are announced in April each year.
