This month we celebrate the 1,474 graduate students who received their diplomas in November and we hear from one of them, who has changed careers from hockey to producing pioneering research on youth concussion care. Plus, we learn about three UBC scientists who have been named Canada Excellence Research Chairs.  

Congratulations to the class of 2023

From November 22 to 24,1,474 graduate students received their diplomas. In all, 1,222 Master's and 252 PhD students from nearly every faculty and discipline earned the right to cross the stage at convocation. Graduate channels broken NHL dreams into pioneering research on youth concussion care

By looking at Scott Ramsay, a former professional athlete who stands at a lofty 6-foot-4, you’d never know the toll a traumatic brain injury has taken on his life. Persistent migraines, bouts of vertigo and mood swings are just a few of the symptoms the 32-year-old has been plagued with during his battle with post-concussion syndrome.

Ramsay, who graduated from UBC last month with a PhD in nursing, has been working to intervene in the lives of youth undergoing similar struggles.

World-leading scientists named Canada Excellence Research Chairs at UBC

Three internationally renowned scientists have been named Canada Excellence Research Chairs at the University of British Columbia.

Their research aims to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, from uncovering disease dynamics in the face of climate change to developing ecosystem conservation strategies and creating more efficient and sustainable processes for manufacturing medicines and agricultural chemicals.

Dr. Kayla King has been appointed as the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Evolutionary Dynamics of Host-Pathogen Interactions, while Dr. Isla Myers-Smith will hold the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Global Change Ecology of Northern Ecosystems. Dr. Corey Stephenson, who will be joining UBC in June 2024, will hold the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Innovative Synthetic Methods for Translational Chemistry.
