Research Facilities
Designed to inspire collaboration and creativity across disciplines, the Earth Sciences Building (ESB) lies at the heart of the science precinct on UBC’s Vancouver Campus. The $75 million facility is home to Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Statistics, the Pacific Institute of the Mathematical Sciences, and the dean’s office of the Faculty of Science. ESB’s teaching facilities will help Canada meet the challenges of a transforming and growing resource sector. Just as importantly, the researchers and students working and learning in the facility will offer a valuable flow of well-trained talent, new ideas, and fresh professional perspectives to industry.

2009 | Dr. Xu developed two novel spectroscopic methods to study the vibrational motion of molecules. 2009 | Dr. Wang crystallized and solved the structures of two protein complexes and two proteins by using X-ray crystallography methods. 2009 | Dr. Carbonetto discovered that we can obtain good approximate solutions to inference has dramatically increased the scope of probabilistic models in science, from physics to genetics. 2009 | Dr. Korman showed that fluctuations in river flow caused by hydroelectric dams can reduce the growth and survival rates of early life stages of rainbow trout, and can alter their patterns of habitat use. 2009 | Dr Huitema investigated related proteases necessary for replication of the hepatitis A and SARS viruses. She characterized some of the most potent inhibitors of these proteases identified to date and described mechanisms of inhibition. 2009 | Dr. Enriquez investigated the problem of effective tactile communication. He developed methods to aid in the creation of meaningful tactile signals. 2009 | Dr. Fujita's research has established a new understanding of how plant cells establish and maintain their direction of growth. 2009 | Dr. Ives's work is the culmination of a 40 year search for an extremely rare and important decay of a sub-atomic particle, the charged K-meson, into a Pi-meson and a neutrino-anti-neutrino pair.
